Seinfeld once said that to men, being a super hero is not just dream, it's an option. Well, it must start very young. We went to a park in the mountains for family home evening and roasted marshmellows and hot dogs. It was delightful. Afterwards, we took a walk while the kids enjoyed climbing on rocks and then jumping off. Kyle, at only 2, and having never actually seen a super-hero show, climbed up on large rocks, and with chest puffed out, yelled, "SUPER KYLE!" before jumping off. It was an honor that he condescendingly granted to even hold his hand as he jumped off (to prevent him from actually breaking something). When it isn't "SUPER KYLE!" it's "MONKEY BOY!" That actually sums up a lot. I guess I knew that my kids would not be the ones to quietly work at developing fine motor skills, or learn to read significantly early. Mastering monkey bars is more important to Bekah (who can almost do them) and bikes and climbing for Kyle. I first guessed this when Kyle could push a chair over, climb up on it and then onto the counter before he could actually walk alone. Dang it.
But, there are perks for having SUPER children. That makes me a "SUPER MAMA!" Luckily, at this age, they still recognize my super powers. Friday, I biked to the Rec. center with the kids to go swimming. It's a round trip probably 6-7 miles, impressive only when you remember I'm pulling 90 pounds behind me. At one point, I could hear behind me two voices chanting together "Go, momma, go! Go, momma, go!" Over and over again. How can you not be a SUPER hero with that kind of support?
